South Seattle Community College This college across the street from Duwamish offers
many amenities, in addition to classes, open to
the public during weekday daytime hours including
a pastry shop, a café, a cafeteria, a formal
restaurant with wonderful gourmet food, a garden
center, a floral shop, a salon, a major theater,
an art gallery, an arboretum, extensive gym &
sports facilities for anyone enrolled in a class,
and the future Seattle Chinese Garden overlooking
the Olympics, Cascades and downtown, perched high
on a bluff. (Outdoor facilities and some services
are open on weekends/evenings as well).
Commercial Areas Other commercial areas near Duwamish include: the new
pedestrian scale shopping village planned for
Delridge and Brandon (.75 mile from Duwamish); plans
for conversion of the old Cooper school into a
cultural and art center with farmer's market on
the weekend (.5 miles from Duwamish); various
convenience stores and Kmart on Delridge Way (.5
mile from Duwamish); a cluster of stores and
restaurants (including Madison's Café) near the
bridge (1.75 miles from Duwamish); Mogan Junction with
a Thriftway and several stores (1.75 miles from
Duwamish); Alaska Junction with a Safeway and many
other stores and restaurants (2 miles from Duwamish);
and Admiral Junction with PCC, Thriftway, Safeway,
$2 movie theatre and many other stores (3.5 miles
from Duwamish).
Green Space The two miles surrounding our site is full of open
green space (hundreds of acres) and parks,
including major parks such as Puget Park, Camp
Long, Riverview Playfield, Westcrest Park (with
off-leash area for dogs), West Seattle golf
course, and a large community center with
playfields. Several parks and the community center
are less than a mile away, including a new
children's playground .25 miles from Duwamish. The
neighborhood is planning a neighborhood trail
system that will pass right by our site. There are
many beaches and other large parks nearby and
three swimming pools, including salt-water Coleman
Pool on the Sound.
Transporation Transportation includes excellent bus service from
the edge of our site, a planned monorail stop in
our general neighborhood, an experimental ferry
from West Seattle to downtown, and a convenient
car commute (about ten minutes to downtown) that
offers three bridge options (West Seattle bridge,
lower West Seattle bridge, and the 1st Ave South
bridge which will have eight lanes by the time we
